Understanding window shutter basics

Throughout the website we have tried to offer straightforward and easy explanations about plantation shutters and the different parts used to form the overall shutter itself.

Since options include shutter design, colour, panel type, louvre size and tilt rod type, we've put together the following to help explain all the parts that make up a shutter.

We hope you find it useful.

Top Rail

The solid piece across the very top of the shutter panel.

Bottom Rail

The solid piece across the very bottom of the shutter panel.

Mid Rail

A solid horizontal piece of wood across the centre of the panel.  Also known as a divider rail.  The mid rail gives strength and support to the structure of the shutter panel.  Shutters with a mid rail also allow you to control the louvres on the upper and lower sections separately.

Window shutters are installed within their own shutter frames and different frame options of two, three and four sided frames are available to suit your particular window design.

The solid vertical edge on both sides of the louvre on each shutter panel.  The louvres are attached to these.

Tilt Rod

This vertical bar runs down the centre of each shutter panel and holds all the louvres together.  Moving the shutter push rod at any point will move the louvres in unison in that shutter section

Mouse hole

These are the small indentations in the shutter rails which allow the louvres to close flat.  They only appear on panels which have the regular tilt rod design.
